Ripple Effect

I don’t know why I didn’t notice this before, but looking at things above water when your camera is undernieth is causes an interesting effect. Unfortunately, anything using a texture with alpha layers doesn’t go well with the effect, as they appar on screen as if there was no water. Anyway, I dropped on by to check out a Rothenburg build by SKIMI. I am on the edge of deciding if I should buy it or not. It looks great, but it just isn’t my style. So many tough choices. It’s got a heavy price, but the texturing and build appears to be well worth it. I saw a few people buying it while I was visiting as well.

Postcard from Second Life

I purchased a domain name and now I’m starting to set things up. Like Linden Labs, I am looking into many open-source products to tie together. Some of the products will allow me to open up my business so that others may assist me. One thing I would very much like to get a handle on is a help desk system to support my products. Unlike fashion design, once a gadget is released, many people tend to need help using it, or have features they would like to see. I feel as if I am falling behind in some of this, as my instant messages are always capped when I log in. Soon, I may have an answer to fix all of this through one web site.

It’s the event we have all been building up for. Grace McDunnough is playing live to benefit the Relay for Life team “Groovy Kinda Quest” over at the Tavern on Mill Pond. The place is packed and Grace has a beautiful voice. I haven’t heard her before, and I’m glad that DrFran Babcock was able to find her for this event. We have lots of prized being handed out and we are trying to raise lindens for SLRFL 2007. You can find more details about it over at the website http://slrfl.org/.

Robie takes me on a tour of the islands where his new crib is loated. Very high detail and interesting architecture here. It’s got an overall nice feel to it. We took a monorail over to another island and passed a few sites on the way.

Island Planning

I’m starting to play around with a few ideas for my future island purchase. I’ve laid out a prim with a checker texture so that each square represents 1 sq. m. I also resized one of my buildings to scale so I could get an idea of scale and what is available. I am trying to work with a lagoon with a sandy black beach. I think I need more flat areas to build my stores on as a bit of a town. Maybe I should just go ahead with flat land instead. I’m not quite sure yet.

Landmark Provider

I got a request to make a product that hands out landmarks. Simple enough, but as an addition, I needed to store and email logs as well. Enter the landmark provider. Every “X” hours, it sends a report of anyone who touched it to receive a landmark. The owner can modify it and also edit a configuration card inside to provide there own email adddress, how often it emails, a delmiter to seperate data fields, and a name of a folder if they have a lot of items that they wish to give into a seperate folder in the users inventory. The main purpose of this product is to see if smaller stores with less products actually lead customers to the main store to purchase more products.

A new rating system

Posted March 10th, 2007 by Dedric Mauriac

I’ve tried out a few rating systems in the past. There is of course, the built-in rating system for the client, but I’m talking about huds and websites. Thinks like the SLBuzz.com watch, TrustNet, and a few others. It appears a new rating system is on the sceene called RatePoint. RatePoint is unique in that a) you can wear a rate status indicator rite on top of your avatar that people can click, and b) hud objects appear for each person close by with an easy to use rating system. Click the number of stars you want to give and choose 1 of three options of why you like them. click submit and done! I love how i don’t see anything on my hud until people come close by.

Voice Addiction in SL

Posted March 9th, 2007 by Dedric Mauriac
Categories: SecondLife

I’ve been addicted to the beta grid for the past two days.  I can only imagine how much worse it will get when the main grid gets the capability to speak.  One of the guys at the avastar emailed me asking about my experiences on the beta grid in regards to the new voice client.  I’ll just post my reply over here as well.

A few of us are hanging out in the beta grid.  There are usually about two groups of people hanging out just talking.  You can talk at the same time that others are talking.  A lot of us are finding voice chat as being quite addictive.  Other times, the buzz seems to wear off - usually when no one is talking.  I’ve had a few interesting discussions already on social issues.  Many people I find, are saying everyone else’s names wrong.  As voice comes to the main grid, we will probably be finding out quickly just how you do say each others names.  Voice adds a whole new level to communication in SL.  You can put emphases on words and play with sarcasm much easier.  The interaction between residents and lindens are much fuller and you get a real sense of who everyone is.  Some residents sound rite with who there avatars are.  Others - you could never imagine fitting the voice to the avatar, so you start to separate the avatar from the person behind the avatar.  Adding in voice morphing is more of a fun toy then an actual application.  Although some sound ok, you can still tell that the voice is modulated.  I’ve only played around with one piece of software so far (MorphVOC Pro).

Rite now, the camera is your ears, and your head is your mouth.  Your voice comes from your head rather then the pelvis (the position of your avatar according to SL servers).  You can move your camera around to listen to other peoples conversations.  Soon, the distance that you can hear will be capped at 30 meters, although the camera can still move around.  This is so that people will be able to visually see anyone who may be able to listen in around them.  If you are more then 30 meters away, then they know you can’t hear them.

When I first log on and see a group, I approach them by walking towards them.  At first, the voices are low, but as I get closer, everyone becomes clear and I can follow the conversation.  Other people at a distance can still be heard, but not as loud.  The servers can take up to 100 voices, combine them depending on your camera location and everyones head, and then send the sound to you in one stream.  I haven’t been able to test the theory of 100 voices, but it was just a number mentioned to us as the limit.  It was stated the closest 100 people would be heard, but I can’t imagine getting more then 100 people in a sphere with a diameter of 60 meters, as well as differentiating between each individual voice.  I can also make out what one person is talking if others are talking, but for easier listening, I can just move my camera up to there face.

We’ve had a lot of fun on the beta grid.  One thing I love is the flash mobs.  We see a couple of people talking in the distance and a group of us decide to run up to them screaming.  The result is that the people we saw hear us approaching and the screaming gets louder.  It’s just a ton of fun as everyone just laughs uncontrollably for the next few minutes afterwards.  We’ve had fun testing out the distance features with animations and rotating objects.  One animation “Rave3″ by Plastic Duck, had our avatars animating all over the place very quickly.  By constantly yelling and screaming, we found that our voice does travel where the animations place our avatars rather then the physical location that our avatars are actually standing.  We have had fun flying away and screaming while we fall back into our groups.  We’ve had several conversations such as - how do you pronounce LOL?  and say things like, “I Less then three you!”  Which is a sideways heart <3.

There is still much to be done with the voice.  Muting, Group chat, IM’s, etc.  Rite now, everything is still pretty early.  The voice servers are separate from the sims, so when the voice servers go down, you are still connected on the sim.  The payment for voice on sims is still being determined.  There is rumor that it may come with the new sims already paying the higher fees, but educational and grandfathered sims may have to pay extra.  Still - everything is rumor.  No one knows yet.  While we were there, many questions were raised such as recording people, machinima, how to abuse report people due to voice, and more.  It’s all exploratory and the lindens who were there were pretty much the ones working on integrating the voice rather then the ones who could look into these issues.  They did however say they would bring some of our concerns to the other lindens who could look into them.

Another Grid

An art show is about to happen here in Arts Plus in a few hours. It is a French show, but also in English. Something about merging two worlds into one with real life, and second life. I wouldn’t have known about it if it were not for voice chat in the Beta Grid. Let me say this - voice chat is addictive. I found it hard to walk away. And when conversations ended, I would start looking for other people to speak with. I think Voice Chat will have a very large impact on second life. I also tried out a voice modulator (MorphVOX) as well. It was a load of fun as Mark Barrett and I would play around altering our voices. The quality of the voice is also excellent.

Jack in the Box for prefabs

Posted March 7th, 2007 by Dedric Mauriac

Catlynn Valencia paid me a visit today and presented me with a problem she had. She builds prefabs, but has a problem with objects not being able to link with large structures. She understood how to take multiple objects into inventory as one item, but the problem is when customers want to move or rotate the buildings when they rez. I took a look over at SLExchange.com and found “Jack in the Box”. This little utility solved all of her problems. You get some scripts copy/transfer that you setup in each piece. You click the box and tell it to store the locations and then put all the pieces in the box. The customer rezes the box and clicks to rez the structure. You can move and rotate.
