Riding my Turkeys

Posted March 6th, 2007 by Dedric Mauriac

For some reason, everyone who drops by becomes fascinated with my turkeys. Sooner or later, they just have to sit down and state the obviouse. “I’m riding your turkey”. I do admit, it is kinda funny. Tonight I tried it out myself. It’s fun to just move around in random spots to pass the time. These birds tend to get caught up against objects when people are riding them.

Getting ready for an Irish day

I redesigned my infamouse classic top hat. I made a variation of it to give that festive feeling of St. Patricks Day holiday wear. I may put a few particles in it as well, or have a few coins drop out as I walk. What are you going to do for the holidays? I hope that you will be wearing a little bit of green yourself.

RSS on a Prim

Working on the third generation of my RSS products, I’ve started experimenting with LIB SecondLife. LIBSL allows a programmer to create a desktop application and interface with Second Life. I have been able to download the RSS feed from my blog and make an image with 9 frames - each containing the title and summary of each blog entry. From there, LIB SL allows me to login and upload the image to Second Life. This is all fully automated. I am still determining if I want to sell this as a product or a service that people can subscribe to. At the moment, it is costing me 10 L$ to upload each image. I suspect that this will be something that is done once a day to keep costs down.

Getting down with the Sheep

Jeremy Flagstaff invited me over to an after-party for the Electric Sheep. I met a lot of cool people and event had a chance to talk to Johnny Ming. Johnny looked a bit odd when I first saw him until his textures rezed and he identified himself as the Al Roker. There were tons of Al Rokers that were supposed to light christmas trees at the NBC sims this past christmas. Most of the event was just dancing around and hanging out. Quite a few odd songs were playing as well.

Matzohenge on SoHo Island

Crap Mariner shows me his new pad made of jelly, matzohs, hummus, nova salmon, etc. All of which Mr. Mariner has had to eat this week. As he guided me around the house, I was half expecting a giant rat to jump out at me. My nerves were eased when I was told that there were two cats in the house. Crap Mariner has a radio show “Crap in the Morning” on just about every station for Crystal Clear Communications except the christian one. 6 - 10 SL time. He also has an interesting podcast - 100 word stories and has weekly challenges that listeners can enter as well. A very interesting guy to know.

An old Region Directory

Hypatia Dejavu drops by asking some questions about the Sim Land Owner Scanner that I made. Some of the feature requests she had brought me back to the first days of making the scanner. It actually started out as a region directory to show pictures of each persons profile and land pictures. You could also teleport if you sat on it to the current parcel. Soon, i’ll have to bring this directory back to life and clean it up. It is one of my very first scripting projects to meet my neighbors when i first came to secondlife. The region directory is not efficient at the moment though.

Scripting Doors - Keep it simple

Alic had some problems setting up doors in her new office. She had a few that she tried out, but they never semed to work rite. Even worse, the doors rotated differently when linked up to the building. I knew what the problem was and how to fix it. However, simply fixing the problem wouldn’t work as she had a ton of other doors to build. I couldn’t stop by every time she needed a new door. Enter the simple door. I created a door for her that would load information from its description to determine how it should rotate. If information isn’t found, she is prompted with a dialog asking if the door is in the correct position, and then it saves. Simple and effective. She was happy.

An Emotional Cube

I’ve enjoyed the FaceAnimCube for a while now, but I have found myself wishing for some extra features. I’ve started to build my own cube from scratch. Rather then using a dialog menu, I’m using images of each emotion and I let the end-user click two arrows to navigate back and forth between each one. When they find an image they like - they click on it. The current animation is always displayed above the HUD object - “Now playing: Wink”. There are only 19 emotions available in SL and of course - the default for a total of 20 faces. I’ve got a lot more in store for this little gadget as well. I find it most helpful for photographs, but I want to set it up for regular chat as well. ;)

Good karma heads your way

Grandpa Winkler was walking about and asked me if I had a coin to spare. I gave him 1 L$ and he replied that good karma would head my way. It was nice to see someone who actually played the part of a begger / hobo. This guy had the whole costume down with little trinkets hanging off of his backpack. I later gave him a few more L$ for his performance. He got on his knees and thanked me, “Jesus bless your soul” he said, “I can now buy some boots!”. He skipped away waving and was gone in a flash. Now that is entertainment.
